African and Haitian Art Sale
Supporters of the arts, we want to share our happy news with you.
One of our founding members has generously donated beautiful African and Haitian artwork to us from his personal collection. He has encouraged us to sell the art pieces. All proceeds will benefit the Crossroads Arts Center’s mission to “cultivate, nurture and grow the arts in our community by supporting local artists.”
Not only is this artwork beautiful, it is diverse and inspiring. Pieces are representative of “outsider art”; works from artists with little or no formal training, who are self-taught, or have little contact with the traditional world of art.

AFRICAN ART FOR SALE $600. African headdress, early 20th century Yoruba beaded crown. This artifact was purchased at St. Louis Black Arts Festival. 20″h x 11″ base to top. According to Yoruba traditions, a beaded crown is the ultimate symbol of Yoruba kingship.

HAITIAN ART FOR SALE: Title Unknown by Guyodo (Franz Jacqueso) 53″ h x 13″ w. $600. Sculptured from light weight aluminum. formerly in collection of Jonathan Demme, film director/producer (including “Silence of the Lambs”). Guyodo continues to live and work on “Gran Street”, one of the poorest areas of Port-au_Prince, Haiti. He works with a community of artists who transform junk into works of art to make a statement against compulsive consumerism and his country’s hopeless misery.

HAITIAN ART FOR SALE “Crow on Bull” by Joseph Louis-Juste )1940-1989) 22.5″ h x 22″ w. $400. Joseph is one of the three brothers who started sculpting in the 60’s with Georges Liautaud. Joseph’s artwork is also represented by Galerie Issa in Port Au Prince and Indigo Arts Gallery, Philadelphia.

HAITIAN ART FOR SALE: Title Unknown by Seresier Louis-Juste $600 24″h x 36″w. The Louis-Juste brothers (Seresier, Janvier, and Joseph) lived and worked in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. Seresier is the only brother still alive and active. He and his brothers were instrumental in passing metal art on to the next generation of Crois-des-Bouquets metal artists.

HAITIAN ART FOR SALE “Augae” Murat Brierre (1938-1988) $1200. 32″h x 38″w. Murat Brierre is still known as one of Haiti’s principal metal sculptors. He worked with George Liautaud and created his own style focusing on multi-faceted figures often reflecting Christian and Haitian Vodo themes. His works have been displayed in US, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. This piece is from the Issa el-Sacih collection of Port Au Prince. The artist lived and worked in Croix-des-Bouquets, a tiny town close to the capital. This art piece was represented by galleries in Haiti and Oak Park, IL and was originally purchased for $1,200.

HAITIAN ART FOR SALE Title Unknown by Gabriel Bien Aime (1951- ) $600. Gabriel apprenticed under the Louis-Juste brothers and Damien Paul in learning and continuing the tradition of cut metal art from used oil drum steel. He and Serge Jolimeau are currently the best known contemporary Haitian metal sculptors.

HAITIAN ART FOR SALE “Male and Female Figure” by Javier Louis-Juste (1940’s – 1990’s, exact date unknown) $1200. Janvier Louis-Juste, along with his two brothers, apprenticed under Georges Liautaud at Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti in the late 50’s, early 60’s. This piece was originally represented by El-Saieh Gallery in Port Au Prince, Haiti.

SOLD “Fabric Paper” by Genevieve Seille (b. France, 1951) $4,000. 48″h x 46″ w Seille works on rough paper using a variety of media which she applies in layers onto the surface. She incorporated “dense signs” in her artwork and left no spot empty. Her work is represented in many collections around the world. One of her constructed bookworks is included in the National Art Library collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
